You are cordially invited to a talk to be given by Mr. Dennis de Uray Ura entitled “From Sultanate to Republic: Turkey 1909 to 1938).”  Turkey was declared a republic in 1923.  The groundwork for the establishment of a Turkish republic had been laid down by the Young Turks Revolution of 1909, Turkey’s entry into World War I in 1915 and Turkey’s victory in the War of 1922.    These were profound events over a relatively short period of time.  The establishment of a republic was part of the process of Turkey forging a new identity as this nation entered the twentieth century.

When nations go through a transition from being a monarchy to becoming a republic both dramatic and subtle changes often ensue.  Mr. de Uray Ura’s talk in analysing the establishment and consolidation of the Turkish republic will highlight the important changes which came.  He will also argue that Turkey is still grappling with the ramifications which came from the shift to a republic.

There can be more to a transition to a republic than what meets the eye.  Australia may be about to undertake a transition to becoming a republic which entails more than constitutional change, as was the case with Turkey.

Mr. de Uray Ura is Hungarian by birth and his family held high positions, serving as judges, diplomats (including postings to Turkey) and positions in the Court of Transylvania.  Due to his family background Mr. de Uray Ura has a deep knowledge of European history.  He will therefore make historical linkage between events in Turkish history and contemporary Turkish society.

Mr. de Uray Ura’s talk will be held-

At 7:30pm on Wednesday the 28th of May 2008
At Bells Hotel and Brewery
At 157 Moray Street South Melbourne
(Corner of Coventry Road)
Mel ways REF: 2K E1

The hotel management would be appreciative if guests availed themselves of the opportunity to purchase a meal or drinks at the bar between 6:30 and 7:00 pm.  The talk will commence in the upstairs function room.  There will be ample opportunity to ask questions and/or make comment at the end of the speaker’s talk.

RSVP:  Monday the 26th of May 2008
